Job Summary:

The Behavioral Health Medical Assistant (BHMA) will assist the provision of medical services under the general supervision of a BHMP. Tasks are delegated to the BHMA may involve direct patient contact including assisting in filling out forms, routine activities such as vital signs monitoring, venipuncture for diagnostic purposes, and collection of body fluid samples from patients. Non face to face clerical activities include updating of patient demographic and outside treatment information, scheduling of diagnostic tests and telephonic appointment reminder calls to patients. Assists or as directed, schedules and coordinates hospital, surgery, complicated case referrals, and procedure activities. May assist in the collection of treatment related and treatment relevant information such as CSPMP and pharmacy refill requests information. BHMPs work in conjunction with RNs to provide oversight in the day to day performance of routine activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

  1. Use acceptable recovery-focused language at all times.
  2. Take appropriate vital signs (Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Pulse Rate, and Temperature) and document this information timely and appropriately. Relay to the supervising RN any findings of abnormal values.
  3. Perform venipuncture to obtain blood samples and collect urine for testing.
  4. Send out any blood samples drawn or tissue samples taken to the appropriate referral laboratory.
  5. Assists in calling in prescriptions (new and/ or refill) for patients per appropriate provider approval.
  6. Assists as instructed in notifying patients of any outside diagnostic test results and set up follow-up appointments as directed.
  7. Assist the patient in scheduling appointment for BHMP, RN, and case management.
  8. Assist in the handling of request for Prior Authorizations from prescription coverage plans.
  9. Assist in the filing of documents as directed by the BHMP or RN.
  10. Maintain the cleanliness of laboratory working areas within acceptable standards.
  11. Practice Universal Precaution in handling bodily fluids and HIPAA regulations in handling Personal Health Information (PHI) at all times.
  12. Assist the BHMP in the completion of documentations of encounters as directed by the BHMP.
  13. Perform tasks delegated by the RN and approved by the BHMP within the BHMA’s scope of duties.
  14. Support PIR in the goal of advancing recovery of participants through the provision of high quality health care services.
  15. Assist in making the participant feel comfortable and welcomed.
  16. Document services using approved forms following the accepted standards and policies set forth by the organization
Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED with two years of direct clinical face-to-face work experience and one year of behavioral health work experience preferred.
  • Medical Assistant Certification or have completed an approved MA training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES),or a medical assisting program accredited by any accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education.

License, Certifications, etc.: ValidAZ State driver’s license, vehicle with State minimum car insurance and ability to meet PIR driving guidelines. CPR certification.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Must have working knowledge of medical terminologies, medical supplies, and ordering/inventory procedures. Ability to work on a computer performing data entry and input into an EMR environment utilizing all applicable HIPPA and healthcare laws and procedures.

Ability to work with other members of the staff in a collegial and supportive atmosphere. Requires excellent communication skills to relate to physicians, patients, outside organizations/people, and other office staff.

Spanish speaking desired/preferable.
