POSITION SUMMARY: The Education Instructor is responsible for providing a variety of unique learning and engagement opportunities, which support our strategic priorities in community education. This position will work with adults and students of all ages with the goal of educating them about AHS' diverse programs, while also building long-term, meaningful and sustainable relationships. The Education Instructor will provide engagement and educational opportunities to new community partners and will work strategically with the Education and Outreach Supervisor and the Education and Outreach Manager to determine effective integration of AHS resources. The Education Instructor will ensure our programs provide engaging, highly interactive and hands-on content that educates and inspires our greater community about issues in animal welfare. Programs include youth outreach, field trips, camps, year round on and off site presentations and workshops, reading programs, scout programs, birthday parties, facilitation of teen service learning program,tours and potentially more as we continue to build our program.  Weekly hours will vary depending on schedule of events, and hours may increase during summer camp season.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Facilitate and lead education programs including birthday parties, reading programs, tours, field trips, camps, in-classroom programs, etc.
  2. Effectively engage and retain students through enthusiastic teaching skills and patience
  3. Follow designated scheduled curriculum and maintain routine for students
  4. Adhere to teaching standards and safety regulations as established by AHS and the Education and Outreach Department
  5. Provide conflict resolution techniques for students in a safe and healthy environment
  6. Set up/break down Education Classroom and/or additional teaching areas and instructional tools
  7. Gain in-depth knowledge of AHS' mission and goals to communicate to prospective partners, customers and the public
  8. Assist Education and Outreach Supervisor in program development
  9. Humanely care for education animals; monitor their health, and report any illness to supervisor
  10. Perform needed cleaning and maintenance of all education animal enclosures and equipment
  11. Work with a wide variety of different demographics throughout the community to deliver offered education programs
  12. Meet and exceed each customer's expectations with excellent service
  13. Handle check, cash, and credit transactions
  14. Position may include some computer and administrative work to support program reporting and record-keeping.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience facilitating education programs for adults and youth
  • 1-2 years' experience working with children in an education or instructional setting (formal/informal)
  • Ability to use positive techniques to manage disruptions among youth.
  • Capacity to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience with public speaking and public appearances.
  • Customer service experience required.
  • Experience working with volunteers is a plus.
  • Familiarity with animal care and proper handling techniques.
  • Access to reliable transportation and the ability to work a flexible schedule including weekends and evenings.
  • Must be able to handle animals safely and humanely in all conditions.

Language Skills: Able to speak, read and write English. Must have excellent communication skills. Spanish language helpful.

Mathematical Skills: Basic math skills.

Computer Skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook; able to learn other software programs as necessary.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid driver's license.

Other Skills, Abilities and Qualifications: Regular attendance is required. Access to reliable transportation to visit all Arizona Humane Society sites and attend meetings as needed.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Work Environment: There will be exposure to dust, heat, cold and temperature changes; occasional wet floors, and animal noises, odors and dander. Most time will be spent in a typical air conditioned and heated office environment.
