Position SummaryThe University of New Mexico’s Department of Linguisticsinvites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor inLinguistics, to begin in August 2020. We seek candidates specializing intypology, whose research orientation is compatible with our commitment tocognitive, functional, usage-based approaches to linguistic explanation. Competitiveapplicants will have additional expertise in language description, languagedocumentation, corpus linguistics or discourse analysis. A successful candidatewill be capable of teaching courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels,including typology and semantics.

The UNM Department ofLinguistics is particularly concerned with the study of languages native to theAmericas, signed languages, and varieties of Spanish. We are especially interested in scholars who will enhance our existing strengthsin linguistic typology, cognitive linguistics, language documentation and description,variationist sociolinguistics, language acquisition, and laboratory phonology.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Linguistics or related field in hand by the time ofappointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • (1) specialization in typology;
  • (2) secondary specializationin language description;
  • (3) research and teaching experience in languagedocumentation, semantics, corpus linguistics or discourse analysis;
  • (4) excellence inscholarship in areas of specialization;
  • (5) excellencein teaching;
  • (6) a demonstrated commitment todiversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working withbroadly diverse communities.
